In an attempt to gain awareness for the endangered panda bear, the world's largest giant panda research base in southwest China's Sichuan Province has developed a dung-for-profit scheme that makes souvenirs from the animal's waste. Now you can have odor-free souvenirs ranging from bookmarks to Olympic-themed statues of the animals made especially by the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding center, which houses about 40 bamboo-fed pandas that produce almost a ton of dung a day.
Jing Shimin, assistant to the base director, tells state-run media that, "we used to spend at least 6,000 yuan ($770) a month to get rid of the droppings but, now they can be lucrative."
A local handicraft company has stepped forward to make products from undigested bamboo picked from the panda waste and put through a special sterilization process which heats the material to 572 degrees Fahrenheit.
The trinkets reportedly don't smell bad because a large portion of the dung contains remains of the bamboo that the pandas are unable to digest.
